More information
The International Firefighting Museum Rijssen is a unique and interactive museum where you can discover everything about the history of the fire service. You will find an impressive collection of old fire engines, helmets, uniforms, and historical extinguishing equipment from both the Netherlands and abroad. This gives you a good idea of how firefighting was conducted in the past and how techniques have changed over the years.
The museum was founded in 1996 by fire brigade enthusiast Dirk Vlot. What began as a personal collection grew into an internationally renowned museum featuring remarkable objects from Japan, South Africa, and China, among others. Think of historical parade helmets, old breathing apparatus, and even a leather fire bucket from Buckingham Palace dating back to 1830.
What makes the museum extra fun is that you can not only look, but also experience all sorts of things yourself. Take a virtual ride in a fire truck, try putting out a fire yourself, or discover how fire investigation works. Especially for children and young people, it is an educational and fun experience where safety and emergency response take center stage.
In addition to the permanent collection, the museum regularly organizes activities and events, such as open days and summer museum days. This makes the museum a fun outing for both enthusiasts of historic vehicles and families looking for an educational activity. The Fire Brigade Museum is therefore a special place where history, experience, and education come together.
