More information
The Mercator-Ortelius House is not a traditional museum, but an immersive audiovisual experience. You will not walk past display cases containing historical objects or lengthy information panels here. Instead, you step into an atmospheric story of light and sound. In six beautiful rooms, we bring the 16th century to life before your eyes. It is a visual journey through time that makes the history of Antwerp tangible.
The Mercator-Ortelius House on Kloosterstraat is one of Antwerp’s best-preserved townhouses.
In the 16th century, Antwerp was a prosperous and economically important city, experiencing its 'Golden Age'. Built around 1550, the Mercator-Ortelius House remains a striking architectural testament to that era. The building owes its name to the renowned 16th-century cartographers Gerardus Mercator and Abraham Ortelius.
Getting there
Coming by bike? Use the public bicycle racks at Groenplaats or Steenplein, as there is no bicycle parking at the entrance. By car, you can park at Parking Zuid, on Vlaamse and Waalse Kaai, approximately 600 metres from the Mercator-Ortelius House. From there, it is around a 7-minute walk.
