From prosperous trading city to the poorest town in the Netherlands
In the Middle Ages, the streetscape of Veere was defined by lively trade relations with Scotland. The streets buzzed with activity as merchants traded their wares and ships came and went, laden with hides, salmon and wool. Veere was a prosperous trading city until the end of the eighteenth century. When the Scots left Veere, trade collapsed and Veere became the poorest town in the Netherlands.

Veere as an artists’ colony
But Veere’s history goes beyond trade alone. At the end of the nineteenth century, artists brought a new dimension to the town. Fascinated by the beautiful buildings, the picturesque quay with its merchants’ houses and the bustling fishing harbour, they let their creativity run free. Their works captured the essence of Veere in all its glory, leaving an indelible mark on the canvas of art history.

Two unique buildings
Museum Veere is housed in two remarkable buildings: the Old Town Hall and the Scottish Houses. In the Old Town Hall you will find a rich historical collection. Behind the town hall stands a tower with a rare carillon, one of the signature sounds of Veere. 'Het Lammeken' and 'In de Struijs', together known as the Scottish Houses, recall the centuries-long trade relations between Veere and Scotland. Here you will find, among other things, the sculpture gallery with the unique sixteenth-century collection of Veere town hall statues.
